At Double Happiness Health we not only treat patients to restore them to good health, we want to teach them how stay healthy. Our treatment is customized to each patient, and continuously assessed throughout the course of healing. We consider our patients to be partners in improving their health, and want to empower and educate them to be able to stay in optimal health. Our goal is not only for patients to leave our clinic feeling better, but to have the tools they need—nutrition, stress reduction, exercises, self-care, or herbal support—to maintain their wellbeing.

We partner with physicians, physical therapists, nutritionists, and other health care professionals to get you the results you need. Our treatments can support and complement the treatments you get from Western physicians, just as Western medicine can support Complementary medicine.

Evaluation & Initial Treatment
Your first appointment, which will last 60-90 minutes, will cover your objectives for treatment, a review of your symptoms, your health history, and any additional health concerns. We will use a combination of Eastern and Western assessment protocols, including tongue, pulse, palpation, orthopedic testing and others as needed, followed by the initial treatment of acupuncture, therapeutic massage, or other therapies.

Second and Ongoing Treatments
What sets Double Happiness Health apart from many other health care providers is that we create and follow a customized treatment plan for you, which may be a protocol of herbs, exercise, nutrition, stress reduction, physical therapy, or other types of self-care. During your second and subsequent treatments, we will assess your health and review your customized treatment plan. We will make any changes in treatment frequency, herbs, dietary suggestions, and other lifestyle recommendations that are appropriate. Your education is part of our ongoing strategy to help you stay balanced and effectively address your symptoms.

I started coming to Double Happiness Health when I went through an immune system problem. Prior to this, I had never explored acupuncture or holistic medicine as forms of treatment - I am definitely a technology major with a natural affinity towards western medicine. However they came highly recommended on yelp and I decided to try them out. They takes the time to walk through new symptoms/improvements in every session and will recommend dietary changes or meditation to supplement the acupuncture. My body is now back at equilibrium and I have I have discontinued acupuncture but I highly recommend exploring it as a treatment method. Double Happiness Health is a great choice if you are looking for an acupuncturist.

Acupuncture originated in China over 3,000 years ago and uses the careful insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific points of the body that control the flow of “Qi” energy. Relatively painless, the experience often results in sensations of heaviness, tingling, or warmth in the area of insertion as the flow of Qi increases. Increased balance in Qi flow throughout the body can help relieve symptoms including pain, reproductive and aging challenges, mind-body imbalances and immune system disorders.

Acupuncture stimulates peripheral nerves in the skin, which relay messages to the brain, creating a cascade of physiological effects such as the blocking of pain receptors (the gate control theory of pain) and the increased release of neurotransmitters such as beta-endorphins, met-enkephalin and seratonin, all of which are effective in blocking pain. Recently, researchers at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey used functional MRI to prove that acupuncture decreased brain activity correlated with lowered pain perception in volunteers.

Your practitioner will begin the session by discussing your health concerns and health history, look at any of your relevant labs or imaging reports and perform any orthopedic testing needed. We will also examine your tongue and feel your radial wrist pulses. Examination of the tongue and pulse are among the principal diagnostic methods in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The color, shape and coating of the tongue provide information about the body that informs the diagnosis. Similarly, pulses relate to the internal organs and have several characteristics to evaluate your physical condition.

Once your practitioner makes a diagnosis, a treatment will be designed specifically to correct your pattern of imbalance. Acupuncture will be part of your ongoing treatment plan—including lifestyle changes, exercise, diet, and self-care—to help you stay healthy.

I love this place. For the last 20+ years, I have had monthly acupuncture visits as the foundation of my own personal health regime. Moving to SF a few years ago, I was astounded with the options. I was led to Double Happiness Health and have stayed put. There are plenty of hormonal challenges swirling through my life and working with Christine and Mia has helped me sustain seamless transitions, balance and healthy energy. They are flexible, smart and very kind. I am exceedingly grateful for Double Happiness Health.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has a rich history of using herbs to support treatment. Herb plants produce and contain a variety of chemical substances that act upon the body to treat numerous illnesses and to assist bodily functions.

Herbal medicine is the substantial counterpart to the energetic medicine of acupuncture. Many conditions can greatly benefit from the use of Chinese herbal therapies alone, or with acupuncture. Modern research proves that herbs are powerful medicine and can have safe, healing effects when properly applied by a licensed herbalist.

At Double Happiness Health, patients are carefully assessed in a holistic manner. Our herbal prescriptions are tailored and change along with the patient’s changing condition. We are always mindful of the patient’s health conditions, medications and supplements, as well as any herb-drug interactions and contraindications. Because we have a healthy respect for Western medicine and because our first concern is for your best care, we will happily communicate and work closely with your physician.

For years I’ve struggled with irregular, painful menstrual cycles, PMS, migraines and digestive issues. Under Christine’s care of acupuncture, individually formulated Chinese herbs and a fabulous massage, I feel great! My cycles are regulated and nearly painless, my PMS has calmed down and my digestive issues have never been better. Additionally, she successfully helped me avoid the cold/flu season with Chinese herbs. Thanks for helping me get my health back!

Massage can be booked as a stand-alone treatment or as a complement to acupuncture and may be used as part of your treatment plan to reduce pain, optimize fertility, facilitate ease of motion or improve your structural alignment. Our team uses modalities such as Myofascial Release, Tui Na, Chi Nei Tsang, Swedish and Deep Tissue to reduce stress, improve circulation, ease restriction and promote mobility.

Paulene is one of the best massage therapists anywhere. She really knows her anatomy and whats going on with your body. She was right on with her assessment of what was going on with my body’s muscular system, which had previously been diagnosed by an Osteopathic doctor and a Chiropractor. Impressive! Paulene has a great technique as well and does not use much oil, so you do not feel greasy afterward. The loft like space and decor is great too.

Mia gave me a fantastic massage. She used the right amount of pressure, she focused on the areas that I wanted to receive some special TLC, and she was careful around injuries. Not a single muscle in my body felt neglected! I left and felt like I was practically floating, I was so relaxed and stress-free. A lot of the tension was gone, and that’s exactly what I wanted. And today I definitely feel the difference—like a lot of the extra gunk is just out of my system, and I’m really refreshed.Highly recommended, and I can’t wait to book my next appointment!
