Menopause

Chinese Medicine sees menopause as a “second spring”. For women this is an opportunity for rebirth of and for herself. At menopause one can be beautiful, vibrantly healthy and grounded in her inherent value. From a biomedical perspective, perimenopause typically begins in the 40’s, and is the process of the ovaries gradually slowing down in production of eggs and of estrogen. Menopause is declared after a full year of no periods, when ovarian function has ceased and there is a marked decrease in the hormone estrogen.  The body begins to use a different type of estrogen called estrone, which is largely produced when adrenals convert androgens to estrone in the fat tissue. Adrenals also produce stress hormones such as cortisol. In a balanced body, the transition to menopause can be fairly problem-free. Prolonged stress, poor lifestyle habits and underlying gut imbalance can cause an imbalance in the sex and stress hormones, making the transition to menopause pretty miserable for some. Chinese medicine has unique strategies to help promote balance in the HPA (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal) axis, improve digestion, and other systems using pattern diagnosis and customized treatment. We use gentle acupuncture as well as nutritional, supplement and lifestyle recommendations to address symptoms at their root. We often treat women with the following symptoms:

  • Heavy menses

  • Hot flashes, sweats

  • Weight gain

  • Low libido

  • Vaginal dryness

  • Insomnia

  • Fatigue

  • Anxiety, palpitations

  • Irritability, rage

  • Urinary incontinence

  • Hair loss

  • Osteoporosis

In Chinese medicine we consider the menstruation as an indicator of your overall health. There is an intricate communication between your brain, ovaries, adrenals, gut and thyroid that manifest in you feeling your best and cycling normally. A healthy menstruation should be regular each month with a steady medium flow and taper, no clots or cramping.  Too often, women become accustomed to mood swings, irregular or painful cycles, spotting and chronic migraines. At Double Happiness Health, we can help establish a new normal with you. Our practitioners are specialized in women’s health. We start with a complete health history and survey of labs as well as our own pattern diagnosis to then create a customized treatment plan for each patient that may include gentle acupuncture, nutrition, herbal prescription, supplement and mind/body and lifestyle tools to bring you and your hormones into balance. We can help with the following conditions:

  • Post birth control syndrome

  • Irregular menstruation

  • Heavy periods

  • Light periods

  • Amenorrhea

  • PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome)

  • Dysmenorrhea (painful periods)

  • PMS, PMDD

  • Migraines

  • Chronic vaginitis

  • Chronic yeast infections
