Resilience in the face of Covid-19

We have never experienced a time quite like this. And we are seeing now, more than ever, how interconnected we all are. Now is the time to slow down, breathe deep and, as best you can, fill your days with love, joy and gratitude. If you're seeking a little extra nourishment, here are some strategies that can make a world of difference.

Take care of each other (from a distance). We need each other now more than ever. Call or write to loved ones to see how they are doing + feeling. Consider the more vulnerable populations in your communities and see how you can creatively support those people or the people caring for them. If you have the financial resources, support a local business or restaurant by buying a gift certificate. Donate refunds from cancelled flights or events to a non-profit you care about. Partners In Health is an incredible organization on the front lines of this global health crisis.

Consume reliable media - do not let it consume you. My trusted sources include my local NPR news station, the CDC and the WHO. In addition, I've signed up for daily email updates from Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. If you're interested, you can find that link here. While it's important to stay informed, it does not serve you to stay glued to the television, radio or social media.

Seek moments of peace and quiet. Spend as much time in nature as you can, meditate, or get lost in a good book. Calming your nervous system is one of the most effective ways to boost your health and immunity. Please remember that panic is even more contagious than this virus and everyone is susceptible to it. If you're feeling fearful or anxious, you're in good company. For a little extra love and support, listen to Sylvia Boorstein's Lovingkindness Meditation, a treasure I've just found in this week's care package from On Being called For the Exhausted and Overwhelmed

Move your body. Exercise is one of the very best ways to alleviate stress and worry. Try turning up some joyful music and dancing around the house for few minutes. This will soothe your nerves and power up immunity by activating your lymph system. Or my favorite at-home resource is a website called Glo.com that provides online yoga, pilates, meditation and strength training classes.

Sleep 8-9 hours per night. A little extra sleep right now will keep you strong and resilient. If you aren't sleeping well, let us know as we’ve got all kinds of ideas to get you back on track.

Nourish yourself. Avoid alcohol and sugar and eat a rainbow of organic fruits and veggies - aim for 6 cups of gently cooked or steamed vegetables daily with a variety of leafy greens and colors (red, orange, yellow and purple). Focus on foods with anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties like ginger, turmeric, garlic, rosemary, peppermint, lemon balm and fennel.

Wash your hands for 20 seconds or the length of time it takes you to sing Happy Birthday twice. You've heard it a million times already but it doesn't hurt to hear it again.

Wishing you resilience, calm and comfort during this time. Please remember that we’re here to support you and your loved ones should you need anything.
